A RARE HARDSTONE-INLAID GILT-BRONZE 'QILIN' CENSER
MEDIUM
Modelled standing foursquare on sharp-clawed feet, the head with a ferocious snarl below the flaring conical funnel on the back, the body Inlaid overall with polished pieces of lapis lazuli, malachite, white and spinach jade, tourmaline, turquoise and agate of several colours, pink and red coral, the bulging eyes with green glass
NOTICE
This qilin censer has been in the Collection of Heber R. Bishop, sold at the American Art Galleries, 25 January 1906, lot 2035. It was exhibited, The National Academy of Design, Loan Exhibition, 1893.
