Each strip is embroidered with shrubs of peony growing from open rockeries, near which a pair of mandarin ducks is swimming. An egret is standing in the water behind, near the stems of a clump of lotus, on a stem of which a kingfisher is clinging. From open rockeries below spring shrubs of peony (Paeonia mutan) behind which a pair of mandarin ducks is swimming. An egret is standing in the water near the stems of a clump of lotus which displays its gorgeous flowers and lifts up a broad peltate leaf to form a kind of canopy for the kingfisher which is clinging to one of the lotus stems.
