Physical description Figure of a child, standing holding a vase containing a single lotus flower and leaf: the combination of child and flower suggesting the association of summer, fruitfulness and fertility. The porcelain is heavily moulded, the joins form the mould being visible, glazed with a bluish-white glaze and decorated in red, black, pink, green, blue, yellow and white enamels. The child has a central topknot of hair and a shaved head, in the style of children's haircuts in China in the past, and wears a diaper with lotus blooms on white scrollwork with yellow ground. A bracelet round each wrist was formerly gilded: most of the gold has now rubbed off. Round each ankle is a similar band in yellow enamel, and the base is decorated with lotus on white scrollwork with pink ground.
